A Tesla sedan collided with a Laguna Beach police car parked on Laguna Canyon road. Luckily, no one was injured in the accident. The Laguna Beach Patch reported that the car accident occurred when the Tesla on autopilot suddenly veered out of its lane and into the police car.
According to The Patch, this is not the first Tesla accident in that area. Last year, at the same location, anther autopilot Tesla crashed, “with almost identical circumstances…the difference was that the male driver ran into a semi-truck.” It is still not clear what caused the car to swerve in the present case, but certainly interesting that it occurred in the same spot as a previous crash.
While no one was injured in this case, autopilot or driverless technology can indeed be dangerous. The technology is still so new and has many safety kinks to work out. In this case, a Tesla spokesperson reminded drivers that the “autopilot feature of the vehicle does not make the car impervious to all accidents, something the company has always been clear about. When using Autopilot, drivers are continuously reminded of their responsibility to keep their hands on the wheel and maintain control of the vehicle at all times.”
Certainly, even when autopilot is in use, the driver should still remain fully attentive to the road. We fully support technological advances, however, we understand that they must be made safely. We are glad that no police officer or anyone else suffered any injuries in this accident. Hopefully Tesla and other companies will learn from this incident to increase safety in the future.
